Holy Smokes Batman!!!! This book is a dark and erotic tale with BDSM entwined. This is book is truer to the lifestyle than any other book I’ve ever read. I’m ranking this up there with the book “The Story of O”, regarding the lifestyle. I’m having a hard time writing this review without giving away a spoiler, but here is my attempt at it. Camille is a “trophy wife” to a jerk named Julian. She is basically forced into a Dom/ Sub relationship with her husband and his partner and friend Andre. Trust me these two men are not the type of Dom’s you want to enter into “play” with. I kind of want to say they are sadistic a cruel and Camille feels she has no other choice but to go along with their commands. But enters Jeremiah into her life, he is a Dom as well. Let’s just say Camille ends up making a decision in the end that everyone will agree with.Each of the characters can stand on their own as the author paints a portrait bringing us into the world she has created. What a great book and it was a fast read. I highly recommend it.

I received an ARC for Simply Scarlet and voluntarily reviewed this book. Camille Alessandra de Clervaux von Beirutt is exactly what her name sounds like - a trophy wife. One evening when she could not sleep, she investigates low noises she hears down the hall in a room for bidden to her. What she sees before her is a threesome involving a hooker and Andre DuPointe, a French banker known to do business with her husband Julien. She becomes the main focus of Andre and is drawn into an evening being initiated into their world, becoming a pawn in their sordid games and planned events.
"You have no idea the depth of darkness that I hold, Camille," Julien said.
Julien had kept this world totally apart from her, along with his many, many secrets. She becomes their newest submissive toy until she meets Jeremiah, a fighter needing sponsoring, and she begins to have real longings of her own. This is my first read by this author, and I found it to be an interesting, rough-and-dirty world.
I chose to read this book based off of other books of Sai Marie Johnsons. I did not know what it was about just that I enjoyed other books by this author.
I was so not disappointed. I enjoy reading the dark romance genre and this book was right up my alley.
Camille is a vanilla wife who is thrust into a dark journey of BDSM. You can imagine that anyone who would have no experience in the lifestyle would be confused and lost, but Camille learns quickly on how to please her Master.
Without giving anything away, because to be honest, one of the best aspects of this book was being surprised with the craziness of the situation, the one thing that sticks out to me throughout it all is how I felt on behalf of Camille. Personally, I couldn't understand how she just went along with all that was happening and this made me incensed on her behalf.
I was totally engrossed in this story and loved every minute of it.
Simply Scarlet is a standalone novel, so no cliffhangers!
For readers that enjoy BDSM might be delighted with this novel by Sai Marie Johnson. It will definitely push you to the extreme and some scenarios may even be too close for comfort, but heading in, I promise that at the end there is a tender love story. Camille is searching for her identity as well as craving for affection. As her husband Julien is cold and is only in this loveless marriage to keep up the appearance of what is expected from a power-hungry male, Camille is just as strong, but when it deals with emotion and human affection she is fooled into believing that Andre is capable of fulfilling this need. It's a rude awakening when she is confronted with the fact that Andre is even crueler than the man she is married to. Jeremiah though is exactly what she needs, a Dom that will teach her all she needs to learn from this world and still come out of it as cherished rather than used. This story was well written and anything but vanilla. Definitely a hot read for any reader that enjoys this genre. Not for the faint of heart that’s for sure.
Simply Scarlet is a book of contradictions--and that isn't a bad thing. Camille is a trophy wife who has believed her life is one thing and finds out there are hidden depths to just about everyone she knows. Her husband Julian is an ass, though he's covered it well. Once she sees past the façade, things escalate out of control.
The interesting thing for me was that she was, at first intrigued by the BDSM aspect that her husband's partner, Andre, introduced. She didn't have much choice but to learn; she was surrounded by people who lived the lifestyle, most especially Julian, and Camille wasn't prepared for what she experienced. Having lived a pretty repressed life, it was easy to understand how she became fascinated...until it became clear that Julian and Andre were more about sadism than the Dom/sub relationship--or even Master/Slave relationship--they claimed. Those sadistic scenes aren't for the faint of heart, but they paint the characters very clearly, which is necessary, considering how events unfold.
Along comes Jeremiah, who understands Camille AND the Dom/sub relationship. He's a true Dom which includes a caring side totally absent from Julian and Andre. I knew immediately I was going to life Jeremiah, where my feelings for Julian were always dislike (as they should have been, I suppose) and curious falling to hatred for Andre (again, as intended, I believe). Jeremiah was strong and powerful, and I really liked him with Camille.
The book is short, and while I would have liked more time with Camille and Jeremiah, I was satisfied that they would be good together. This isn't necessarily a romance, and yet it is. If you are interested in dark, erotic BDSM type stories, go for it! I wasn't disappointed, and you won't be, either.
